Academic Overview
Reading:
We are implementing the brand new MyView Literacy Program by Pearson. MyView Literacy 2020 is a comprehensive,
interactive literacy program that provides a balanced approach to teaching reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing.
•Lessons begin with a focus lesson where the teacher models a strategy or skill.
•Students then practice the strategy or skill through carefully planned activities through Reading/Writing Workshop.
•During Reading/Writing workshop students apply what was focused on during the mini-lesson.
•The teacher confers with students during independent reading to be sure they are successful in their practice, provides 1:1 instruction, and works with small groups of students.
•The focus is on phonics, high frequency words, vocabulary, grammar, comprehension and fluency.
Writing:
We will be doing a lot of writing this year. I want your child to feel the pride and power of expressing their thoughts effectively through writing. Writing instruction emphasizes the steps of the writing process, which are Prewriting, Drafting, Revising, Editing, and Publishing. Writer’s Workshop will be done on a regular basis. Children will learn to write stories, instructions, reports, friendly letters, personal narratives, and research reports. The use of corrects grammar and punctuation is also taught.
Handwriting:
Manuscript handwriting is reinforces and practiced daily. All daily work is expected to be completed neatly and to the best of each child’s ability.
Math:
We will be using the math series called My Math. The McGraw-Hill My Math program provides the rigor, personalization, and student engagement our students need to be successful with the Office of Catholic Schools mathematical benchmarks. Emphasizing mathematical basics, critical thinking and hands-on activities at every grade level will help our students to connect learning to real world problem solving.
Religion:
Our school uses the religion series Finding God. The 2nd grade year introduces some basic teaching about the sacramental life of the Catholic Church. There is emphasis on the sacrament of Reconciliation which the children receive later this year. The 2nd graders attend all school masses and prayer services which are held throughout the year.
Science and Social Studies:
We will be using the Harcourt School Science Curriculum. The main topics of study that we will focus on this year are: Life Science: science inquiry skills, a world of living things, homes for living things; Earth Science: exploring our earth, weather and space; Physical Science: exploring matter, energy in motion; as well as a special unit covering dinosaurs and a special end of the year surprise project!
